About Operations
Mansfield Fire Department serves a population of approximately 75,000 citizens in a service coverage area of more than 36 square miles. Mansfield is located mostly within Tarrant County, and also shares a portion of Johnson and Ellis counties. As a result, the department provides mutual aid to various fire departments in the area.
Mansfield Fire Department handles more than 5,000 emergency incidents a year. Operations Division has three shifts, A, B, and C, with 25 firefighter/paramedics assigned to each shift. This allows the department to have a minimum of 26 firefighter/paramedics on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each fire company has a captain that oversees their activities and each shift has a battalion chief that oversees the shift. The city is divided into five fire districts with one fire station per district.
Mansfield Fire Department responds to a variety of calls, including:
- Automobile accidents
- Building fires
- Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
- Lockouts
- Rescues
- Water rescue emergencies
- Wildland fires
Additionally, fire station personnel are responsible for:
- Equipment and station maintenance
- Public education at schools and community events
All of the ambulances and paramedic fire apparatus are equipped with MICU equipment so that immediate patient care can be initiated by the first arriving unit. This is why in some cases a fire engine or quint will arrive before or along with an ambulance, as either may begin patient care. The team assigned to a particular apparatus (engine, quint, truck, or ambulance), and the apparatus itself is known as "company."
