What Are Our Goals?

The primary goal of this master plan process was first and foremost to map out a clear direction for the future of the parks and recreation department that reflected the needs and wants of our growing community. More specifically, however, our advisory committee was tasked with narrowing that monumental task into specific strategies that would make it all possible.

 After analyzing the current inventory, benchmark data, standards and community feedback, the committee was able to identify six key themes and the strategies needed to realize those goals.

INCREASE ACCESS TO QUALITY PARKS & PROGRAMS
  • Identify spaces in each quadrant to add neighborhood or community parks to meet or exceed NRPA 10-min walk goal
  • Improve amenities at current parks for expanded service
  • Ensure all current and future parks are optimized for all abilities
  • Add programs, events or facilities to reach under served populations including age, interest and ability
  • Review and update standards and parkland dedication ordinance to improve funding and balance geographic equity
  • Ensure all parks and facilities are safe through design and maintenance principles, close monitoring and responsiveness
IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE
  • Create engaging parks, programs and special events that encourage play, fitness, education and personal connections for all ages, interests and abilities
  • Encourage health and wellness through quality education, programming and facilities that support emerging trends
  • Promote & support beautification of key spaces
  • Seek out community partners to expand opportunities for collaboration and promote ownership in parks system
  • Remain responsive, receptive and reactive to the community with consistent communication, quality customer service and continuous improvement
ENHANCE & IMPROVE EXISTING PARKS, TRAILS AND FIELDS
  • Increase proactive maintenance strategies 
  • Identity and replace aging structures
  • Add improve amenities and equipment at existing parks to increase user experience
  • Meet or exceed all standards set by committee
  • Design parks for highest quality, ease of maintenance and user experience
  • Complete Walnut Creek Linear Park 
  • Begin spine trails
  • Seek opportunities to connect new and existing parks
  • Build new sports complex and renovate existing fields
  • Implement new technology to optimize operations
EXPAND RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES
  • Add splash pads to new or existing parks when possible
  • Build family aquatic center
  • Remodel MAC and build new recreation center to provide fitness equipment, aquatics and classroom/rental spaces at both facilities
  • Expand program and events to stay current on trends and demographic needs/demands
  • Build specialty parks or amenities for enhanced experience for all residents, including outdoor fitness equipment, dog parks, skate parks, tennis courts and lake access

SERVE AS A SOURCE OF COMMUNITY PRIDE



  • Build innovative destination parks and facilities and offer unique programs & events to encourage positive attention and tourism 
  • Keep excellent reputation of maintenance and customer service with parks and programs through support & training
  • Continue to foster a work culture that embraces teamwork, increases job satisfaction and creates community ambassadors
  • Strive for fiscally responsible, strategic growth that aligns with economic development
  • Increase exposure through engaging marketing and outreach efforts
  • Highlight and protect the community’s unique historic, cultural and environmental resources

PROTECT & PRESERVE NATURAL SPACES



  • Increase parkland through land acquisition and enhanced parkland dedication requirements
  • Set example via responsible ecological choices in park design, construction and maintenance
  • Build Nature Education Center at ONP to provide more opportunities for environmental appreciation and education for all ages
  • Identify environmentally sensitive areas such as waterways and wildlife habitats and encourage conservation and protection
