Proposition D in the City of Mansfield’s upcoming bond election calls for $10.5 million to complete the Walnut Creek Linear Trail to the city’s eastern and western city limits and extend the Pond Branch Linear Trail in Historic Downtown Mansfield.
The existing Walnut Creek Linear Trail connects six parks, multiple neighborhoods and business districts throughout the City of Mansfield. If voters approve Proposition D, that trail would be extended from Town Park to Mans Best Field Dog Park and the western city limits, and from the 360 Tollway to the eastern city limits.
The proposed expansion would also close a gap in the existing Walnut Creek Linear Trail, adding a section that spans from Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park to Cannon and Carlin roads. If constructed as proposed, the completed Walnut Creek Linear Trail would stretch approximately 10 miles across the city.
Pond Branch Linear Trail in Historic Downtown Mansfield would also be extended with the approval of Proposition D, adding more than a mile from East Kimball Street to South Main Street.
Mansfield residents have identified additional trail mileage as one of the highest-priority parks and recreation needs in the city, according to the 2020 Parks & Recreation Master Plan. The master plan calls for the completion of the Walnut Creek Linear Trail and the addition of more than 40 miles of trail along a previously identified spine trail network before the city reaches build-out. The spine trail network is a series of trails – including the Walnut Creek Linear Trail – mapped by city planners that would connect all current and future parks in Mansfield to a trail. The design and construction of the proposed linear trail extensions would take approximately three years to complete. With a total cost of $10.5 million, the proposed project’s anticipated maximum property tax rate impact on Mansfield homeowners is currently estimated to be $0.72 per $100,000 of assessed value per month. That means, should voters approve Proposition D, the owner of a $300,000 home in Mansfield would pay a maximum of $2.16 per month in additional property taxes.
