Hazardous Household Waste Drop-off Events

Did you know that it is unsafe to dispose of used batteries in the trash or recycle cart? Ever wonder what to do with leftover paint or household chemicals you no longer need? Keep these substances and more out of the landfill by dropping them off at the monthly Hazardous Household waste drop off events.

The Environmental Collection Center (ECC) is the city's permanent drop off facility for unwanted household hazardous materials (anything with a warning label), electronics and recyclables. This facility is operated by the city's Environmental Services Department, and is open the second Saturday of every month from 10 am - 3 pm, and the Thursday and Friday before the second Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

So far in 2019, resident drop-offs have totaled 116,302 lbs. of waste being diverted from the landfill.  More than 20 tons of tires have been dropped off during the HHW events this year, as well as, 76,325 lbs. of electronics, 36,518 lbs. of hazardous chemicals and 1,210 lbs. of light bulbs. More than 1200 gallons of motor oil, 345 gallons of antifreeze, and 200 lbs. of oil filters have also been collected for recycling since January 2019.

In 2018, 2,091 households participated resulting in 179,748 pounds of hazardous waste collected and 97.1% diverted from the landfill. We are on target to surpass these numbers in 2019 with the help of residents like you who take the time to bring in materials during these monthly events.

After collections are made each month, the majority of the materials are then sent out to be recycled. Each time you bring in your materials to a HHW event, you are helping to improve our environment by keeping dangerous chemicals out of our waterways and landfills, and preserving precious natural resources through recycling.

Remember to bring a proof of residency (utility bill or driver's license) when you come. Staff will be available to unload your car. It's free and easy so don't miss out! Visit the ECC, located at 616 South Wisteria on the following dates:

  • October 10, 11, 12
  • November 7, 8, 9
  • December 12, 13, 14
