1. What is a plat?

A map of a subdivision that represents a tract of land, showing the boundaries and location of individual properties, streets, easements and other pertinent information. After a plat is approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission it is filed with the appropriate county clerk and becomes a legal lot of record for which a building permit can be issued.

2. Who maintains FM 1187, FM 157, SH 360, and U.S. 287?

The roads, service roads, and signage are maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation and should be directed to them. The main number is 817-370-6500.

3. Who maintains the right-of-way?

Questions regarding mowing in the right of way should be directed to the Parks Department. It is a City ordinance that property owners are responsible for mowing and maintenance up to the curb or to the edge of the pavement.

4. Who do I contact if there is debris in the road or if there is brush blocking my visibility?

Contact the Street Operations Department at 817-276-4243 if there is anything in the roadway or blocking visibility.

5. Who repairs streetlights?

Oncor & United Cooperative owns, operates and maintains all streetlights within the City right-of-way. Requests for repairs and consideration for installation of new streetlights can be made to the City of Mansfield at 817-276-4243.

6. Who do I contact for potholes or other minor street repairs?

Street Operations will service potholes and minor street repairs. Please call the City of Mansfield Street Operations Department at 817-276-4243, or you may report a pothole repair online.

7. Can I get speed bumps put on my street?

The City Council has discussed this issue most recently in September 2002 and January 2004. The City of Mansfield will not install speed humps for the following reasons:

1. Speed humps will only reduce speed at a single location if one is used. A series of humps is necessary in order to be effective, which can be costly to install and maintain.
2. Can cause a "rough ride" and discomfort for all drivers
3. Drivers may try to drive around them
4. Speed humps may divert traffic to another location, creating problems at a new location.
5. Pavement markings and warning signs are not aesthetically pleasing
6. There can be a loss of parking in the immediate vicinity of the speed hump
7. There can be an increase in noise due to the sudden braking, rapid acceleration, and objects bouncing in the back of trucks.
8. Personal injury or vehicle and cargo damage can occur if vehicle passes too fast over humps.
9. Liability can be an issue if not be installed properly.
10. It can be difficult in locating speed humps in neighborhoods. People are quick to want them in their neighborhood, but "not in front of my house."

8. How can I request for the Speed Trailer in my area to monitor traffic flow?

The Mansfield Police Department receives several requests to have the speed trailer placed to monitor speed complaints. To have a location placed on the list you must contact the Mansfield Police Department at 817-473-0211.

9. Can I have a child at play sign installed?

The City of Mansfield no longer installs "Children at Play" signs. The Texas Manual on Traffic Control Devices (TxMUTCD) which is a State/Federal Manual that sets the standards on which all signs, markings and signals are regulated, no longer recognizes these signs as acceptable to install because they are no longer enforced. Ultimately, drivers choose to ignore them and studies have shown that they do not have impact on speed.

Signs you may have seen in other neighborhoods were installed previously, when past manuals recognized these signs. The best deterrent for residential speeding is police enforcement. The Traffic Division of the Mansfield Police Department can be reached by calling 817-276-4700.
