About the Park & Trail

Phase 1 of the Walnut Creek Linear Park opened in January 2007 and consists of a 12-foot wide concrete trail that extends from Town Park to James McKnight Park East along Walnut Creek.

The trail is 1.9 miles long and connects five parks, three neighborhoods and two schools. Trail heads can be found at:
  • Hardy Allmon Soccer Complex
  • James McKnight Park East
  • James McKnight Park West
  • Katherine Rose Memorial Park
  • Palm Court
  • Town Park

  • Scenic overlooks

Historic Railroad Bridge

The historic railroad bridge, Jeffryes Crossing, was named after Steve Jeffryes who served on the Mansfield Park Facilities Development Corporation Board from 1994 to 2004.

Trail Hours

  • Lighted Trails: 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Unlit Trails: 5 a.m. to 30 minutes past sundown

Development Phases

Existing Linear Park

  • Completed in January 2007
  • 1.9 miles of concrete trail
  • Bird watching stations, scenic overlooks, picnic stations and wildflower area
  • Connects five parks, two schools and four neighborhoods
  • Soft surface trails for nature walks

Phase 2 - From Matlock Road to Joe Pool Lake

  • To be developed in three phases known as 2A, 2B and 2C
  • Approximately 2.8 miles of both concrete trails and decomposed granite trails
  • Expected to connect with trails in the Joe Pool Recreation area in conjunction with the City of Grand Prairie
  • Completion dates:2A - to be determined, 2B - Fall 2018, 2C - to be determined
  • Includes Oliver Nature Park
  • Will connect at least two parks and three neighborhoods

Phase 3 – From Highway 287 to Matlock Road

  • Will connect two parks, one school, five neighborhoods, Fieldhouse USA, StarCenter Mansfield and the Shops at Broad development to the trail system
  • 2.25 miles of off-creek trail connection
  • Completion date - To be determined

Phase 4 - From Main Street to West City Limits

  • From Main Street to Western City Limits along Walnut Creek
  • Approximately 2 miles of trails
  • Will connect to downtown area, several parks and neighborhoods
  • Completion date - To be determined
