Household Hazardous Waste

Residents may dispose of household hazardous waste such as aerosol cans, paint and cleaning products at the Environmental Collection Center on the second Saturday of each month, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Thursday and Friday before the second Saturday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.  A driver's license for proof of residency is required.  Here is a list of acceptable items for disposal.

Syringes and Medication

Improper disposal of used syringes or "sharps" and medication can have harmful impacts on the sanitation workers that service our community and our local natural resources.  Syringes can cause injury or infection to the workers handling our waste.  Medications flushed down the toilet or dumped down the storm drain pollute our rivers and lakes which serve as drinking water resources and wildlife habitat.

What to do with syringes:

  • Never throw loose needles in the trash or recycling bin.
  • Place needles and syringes in a hard plastic or metal container with a tightly secured lid. Label the container "syringes," "needles" or "sharps."  A laundry detergent bottle can be used. Reinforce the lid with heavy duty tape.
  • Dispose of container in household trash. Do not place in recycling bin.

What to do with prescription medication: Drug Take-Back Program

  • Do not flush medication down the toilet or drain unless the label specifically instructs you to do so.
  • Take left-over prescription drugs to Mansfield's Drug Take-Back Program.  The Mansfield Police Department hosts events twice a year.  There is also a permanent drug take-back collection point in the lobby of the Public Safety Building, 1305 E. Broad St.  The building is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Monday through Friday.
