Are gas wells noisy when they are operating?

Gas wells in production do not create much noise. A gas well may occasionally need the use of a lift compressor to maintain production, but City regulations require that any noise from the compressor above the legal limit must be mitigated.

Most noise occurs during the drilling and fracturing of a gas well.  The City has several requirements to mitigate noise from these operations, including the use of sound blankets around the drill site, the use of electric drilling rigs instead of diesel rigs, and limiting certain operations like hydraulic fracturing to daytime hours only.  The regulations do not require the elimination of all noise from a drill site, but the noise must be kept within the specified legal limits.
